Travel Food Hunt – Kueh Pie Tee, the Nyonya Tapas in Malacca

What could you have before your Nyonya meal in Malacca, Malaysia? In Spain, we have Tapas as their favorite appetizers. For Baba and Nyonya in Malacca, Kueh Pie Tee (or Top Hat), is their best answer to the Spanish. Each and every authentic Nyonya food restaurant should have it as starters in their menu. If you visit Malacca (Melaka) in the Southern region of Malaysia, Kueh Pie Tee is something you should try for your food explore.

Originally from Malacca, Kueh Pie Tee is a traditional Nyonya pastry made of flour and fried to a shell cup then filled with sweet and hot mixture of thinly sliced vegetables and sometimes prawns. I like it because of its crispy shell cup and Popiah-like filling.

One of the best place to taste this mouth watering dish is Nancy’s Kitchen, one of the authentic Nyonya food restaurant in Jonker Walk neighbourhood.
