Hangzhou

After having an immaculate night out in Shanghai city centre, we went straight to our 2nd destination of the tour on Day 2, another important city of south east China, HangZhou. ‘Wow! It was such a rush tour!’ Yes. It was unfortunately. We expected that since it was a full packed vacation package covering 5 cities in 8 days. ‘Was it the end of Shanghai city tour?’ No. We will spend another day in Shanghai on our last part of the tour before leaving China. :)

Where is HangZhou then? HangZhou is the capital of ZheJiang province located at 180Km southwest of Shanghai. It took us 2 and a half hours to reach there. She is an another fascinating travel destination of China where it sites one of the most beautiful lake in China called Xi Hu, or West Lake. In ancient China since thousand years ago, SuZhou and Hangzhou has always be nominated as 2 paradise cities for human being. ‘Shang you tian tang, xia you Su Hang’ which means while paradise is our dream home afterlife, SuZhou and HangZhou is people dream home while alive.

HangZhou street

Though it is only 180km apart, HangZhou is a totally different city from Shanghai, in terms of people, buildings and envirenment. While Shanghai is a metropolitan city full of skyscrapers, people and cars, HangZhou is a serene city full of trees, water and poets, but people and cars. While Shanghai people could be described as businessmen, HangZhou people would be an educationalist.

Dumpling rest2

On our way to HangZhou, we dropped by at a motorway rest area to release some weight off. After losing some weight (few grams I presumed), we felt hungry and bought some famous HangZhou meat dumplings to fill up the gap and to heat up our body as temperature in that morning has dropped to around 12°C. :)

WanSong Academy3

As we were approaching HangZhou, the environment changed. Instead of concretes and skyscrapers, we saw trees, rivers, canals, farms and bungalows at both sides of the motorway. Yes! Farmers are staying in huge 4-storey-Bungalows.

WanSong Academy1

Our first destination of HangZhou city tour was WanSong Academy. It was the famous academy in old China where the chinese legend, butterfly lovers, Zhu Ying Tai and Liang Shan Po met each other. Their love story was being screened several times and is described as the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet. I’m not a big fan of them though. What I admired most was the environment inside the academy campus. Beautiful pines, misty weather, fresh air and clear water were what it has, and what I appreciated.

WanSong Academy2

After the entrance is a foot path leading to the main courtyard of the academy where huge arch, gardens and fish pond are connecting each other.

There was a young lady tour guide who led us to wander around the campus.

WanSong Academy4

For students (hundred years ago) who wanted to study in WanSong Academy, he needed to walk up to the classroom at hill top! (Cool isn’t it?)

WanSong Academy15

Other than classrooms and student hostel are pines and woods. The academy was surrounded by beautiful scenery and refreshing air.

WanSong Academy14

Other than pines and garden are these statues of those famous students graduated from the academy.

WanSong Academy9

Once we reached the top, there were still doors after doors to pass through before reaching the classrooms. Just imagine how difficult was it before knowledge could be acquired in old time. We are so lucky now!

WanSong Academy8

WanSong Academy5

In chinese culture, we pay highest respect to our parents at home, and to our teachers at school. In WanSong Academy, there was a memorial hall where students pay their tribute to the master of academic, Kung Zhi.

WanSong Academy6

There were museums for the WanSong Academy and also these 2 guys, Liang ShanPo and Zhu YingTai. Can you spot which one is Zhu? She was actually dressed up as male in order to study in the academy, and later fell in love with Liang…

WanSong Academy7

Looking out to these bamboo garden from the loo’s window was actually a pleasant experience! :)

WanSong Academy10

Thoughtfully designed staircase where you would see lesser steps from top (as opposed to the photo above where 7 times more steps are seen from bottom hill!) which meant that there are a lot more ’steps’ for a person to reach the top of his carreer but only a few steps for him to fall down…. :)

From these photos, you could imagine how cold was the weather there. I wore long johns and jumpers but still feeling cold, especially when it was windy and overcasting sky. We left WanSong Academy with good impressions. We started to realise why HangZhou is claimed to be one of the most preferred city to stay in China…. what a paradise. Shanghai is located in eastern coast of China, north of Taiwan and South of Korea, having a coordinate reading of 31°12′0″N 121°30′0″E. With a sub-tropical climate geographically, Shanghai is experiencing 4 distinct seasons every year. It was end of Autumn towards Winter when we were there in November with a cold tmeperature of 18°C at noon and 6°C during night time. Due to its high humid air, the whole Shanghai city was covered by a thick mist and its visibility was up to a few Kilometers only! I’m not sure about other seasons since I haven’t been through, but this was definitely a sad discovery to me, in terms of photo taking where sceneries beyond like 4 KM was inevitably dissappeared in the mist.

However, the night in Shanghai was totally different. The air suddenly cleared up, perhaps with the help of those magnificient building lighting lit up, Shanghai was eventually turned alive and started to show its glamour! That is why ‘Shanghai Night‘ is so well perceived as the main Shanghai attraction!

HuangPu River 11

After spending slightly more than an hour at our first destination in Shanghai, we left ChengHuangMiao for our dinner. As for an all-inclusive travel package, dinner was arranged well ahead at one of the local restaurant and 9 courses were served with local beers as standard beverage option. Nothing to shout about, dinner was acceptable with some unique local taste. What attracted me was the wild lighting around the restaurant. I took a photo of my wife posing in front of a waterwheel of the restaurant which I love it every much.

Shanghai Night 1

After the dinner, we headed straight to the Bund to catch a night cruise along HuangPu Jiang, the main river of Shanghai separating the city into PuXi and PuDong districts. While PuXi is the older district siting many of the financial instituitions along the famous ‘Shanghai Bund‘, PuDong is the upcoming business district featuring many of the younger entrepreneurs in Shanghai. Cruising along HuangPu river is a very good ideas to admire the beauty of ‘Shanghai Night’, though standing on the shipboard fighting the freezing 5°C cold wind was a bit crazy! Who cares! I enjoyed every minute of it.

Com’on honey! Let’s pose in front of The Bund Yacht Club….

HuangPu River 9

What a beautiful night scene of PuXi. Tourists could even spot advertisement in the air… :)

HuangPu River 6

Something crossed over my mind… how much the Shanghai council pays for the electricity bill every night?

HuangPu River 12

Thanks to the idea and initiatives of the late leader of China Communists Party, Mr. Deng Xiao Ping, PuXi (photo above) and PuDong (photo below) are now show little difference in terms of city developments.

HuangPu River 4

The most significant landmark of PuDong district is Oriental Pearl Tower. It is the tallest telecommunication tower in Asia and is the third tallest in the world. I would say it’s the most beautiful TV tower in the world. Looking at the two giant spheres with 5 ‘legs’ supporting it, the futuristic design of Oriental Pearl Tower (photo below) attracts more than 5 millions visitors every year!

HuangPu River 8

We docked after cruising HuangPu River for around 3 quaters of an hour and took the double-decked lift up to the observation floor of Oriental Pearl at 263m high, in a thundering 40 seconds!

Oriental Pearl Tower 1

From the observatory floor, we could oversee the Shanghai city night scene clearly and there was a board indicating the name of those 40 important buildings at the Bund.

We took MAS B777 from KLIA to Shanghai’s Pu Dong International Airport. The wobbling journey took us 5 hours from 9:40am to 2:40pm to reach Shanghai. Since Malaysia and China are within the same time zone, we didn’t experience any time lag when we reached Shanghai. We had a complimentary refreshment of omelette set lunch [...]

Before we departed for our journey to Shanghai, I was kind of uneasy with the itineraries of this trip, wondering how we could visit so many tourist spots and cities in only 8 days. This was my first experience of travel by all-inclusive vacation package. Before this, I used to self-travel or travel by ‘Free [...]
