Travel photography tips – Dell S2340L IPS monitor

Dell S2340L IPS monitor is my latest LED screen to be coupled with my existing PC at home. A high quality monitor with reasonably accurate color reproduction is essential for travel photographers to post-edit their photos taken on travel.

Unless your camera can fulfill all your requirement when capturing a travel scene, and let you share your photos straight out of camera, onto photo sharing sites such as Flickr or 500Px, you will need to edit your photos with photo editing softwares. And to accurately post-process your images to deliver something that both you and your audience or readers out there will find equally thrilling, you need a decent monitor to work on your images.

IPS or In Plane Switching technology is a relatively new and ideal LCD panel that promises high quality color production works. It was being popularized by iPhone and later the rest of the smartphones then the PC market. IPS is well known for its accurate color reproduction when coupled with LED back light. Most importantly, IPS has a super duper wide viewing angle of 178° with minimum color tint and contrast shift.

For that reason, I bought a Dell S2340L IPS monitor recently. Dell S2340L IPS monitor is the least expensive IPS panel LED screen by DELL that cost less than USD200. Despite the low price, it delivers high quality colors with true white and grey which I was previously stunt by my iPhones. Though it was not factory calibrated, only a slight adjustment on RGB custom setting (The default color is slightly warmer that standard, so I lowered the Red setting to 93% and Green to 93% while the Blue remained.) will give you a stunning color performance.

Rather than a replacement, I put Dell S2340L IPS monitor alongside my existing ACER H233H Full HD monitor. Both are full HD and both have the same size of 23″ diagonally. Comparing them side by side and you will realize the advantages of IPS panel if compared with the TN panel. As you can see from the image above, Dell S2340L IPS monitor delivers a purer grey while Acer H233H started to show a shift in contrast and tint after only about 30° away from center axis!

Dell S series Ultra Sharp LED’s has a glossy screen that may not preferred by all, albeit I personally love it. I love glossy instead of mat screen because photos will look clearer, sharper and cleaner. It will make all my images appeared identical between my PC, iPhone and iPad. Off course, I have to live with the facts that sunlight can be reflected very badly during day time if windows are behind your seat.

I’m putting 2 monitors side by side to extend my viewing size. With Windows 7 or 8 and a proper Graphics processing card, your PC windows width can be extended to a second monitor which is good for multitasking and reviewing 2 photos side by side.

After all, Dell S2340L IPS monitor is a good start to provide travel photography hobbyists a great monitor to process their images captured on travel. Though with a cheap price, Dell S-series LED’s do not look cheap. Featuring a full customizable menu screen, glossy glass finish, virtually borderless edges, IPS panel, 23″ Full HD resolution, HDMI and VGA inputs, tiltable stand and great colour accuracy, Dell S2340L IPS monitor is definitely your first investment in travel photography. It will entice your friends and fans with more color accurate and popping travel photos! – Travel Feeder
