George Town Festival 2013 and UNESCO Heritage Celebration in Penang

Each year around this time, we see people coming to Penang in droves for one simple reason, the George Town Festival 2013. No exception for this year. People from all over the world are going to Penang to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the inscription of George Town as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites, since 5 years ago on 7th July 2008.

George Town Festival, a month-long celebration of art, music, theatre, dance, opera and film to commemorate George Town’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage listing, are conducted from 7th June until 7th July each year. This year, the celebration is coming to an end on this coming Sunday. Among the highlighted events for the last 2 days on 6th and 7th July, is the Heritage Celebration, a 2-day long celebration commemorating the inscription of George Town as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008! It is a celebration of the living heritage of George Town, demonstrated through traditional and multicultural arts and practices, food, craft, and events that highlight historical and cultural pride.

This year, since 7th July falls on Sunday, huge crowds of tourists as well as local people are expected to flock into this multi cultural city of George Town and the Penang state to join the celebration.
