Cape Verde, an unfamiliar name to many, even to the most seasoned travelers. However, if you are an avid traveler who loves authenticity in travel, the lesser known island country of Cape Verde must be in your top 10 list. Used to be a Portuguese colony in Western African region, Cape Verde is now an independent island country located 500km off the Western African coast of Senegal.
What made Cape Verde so special to avid travelers are the authentic environment. The weather is tropical with sunshine all year round and cool currents from the open ocean that separates Cape Verde from the rest of West Africa helps in keeping its temperatures moderate.
A stable political and economic system also help to support its West Africa’s highest standard of living. The local people, who represent varying degrees of African and Portuguese heritage, are always friendly and welcoming, which make travelers warm hearted at all times.
Planning holidays to Cape Verde will never be easier. Regular flights direct from Europe and the US are available since all its major islands have their own airport. Once you have arrived to any of the Cape Verdean airport, you can always arrange for island hopping with frequent internal flights or boats in between islands. Though tiny in area, the islands contain a remarkable profusion of landscapes, from Maio’s barren flats to the verdant valleys of Santo Antão. Fantastic beaches are found everywhere especially in the island of Sal and Boa Vista. Cape Verde remains as a destination for the hikers, the die-hard windsurfers, and the deep-sea anglers. A simple island hopping tour will definitely please every traveler’s itchy feet.
Cape Verdean towns are very warm and colourful. The biggest is Praia and Mindelo. Every town has its own distinctive atmosphere, architecture, colour tones, population… Various quaint little villages are scattered here and there over the islands, whether located in the mountains or by the sea.
There are no museums or monuments, however, various Cape Verdean artists display their work in the local restaurants and bars. You can also visit their workshops on the island of Sao Vicente. Music is also an integral part of the Cape Verdeans’ life. A mixture of Portuguese and African influences and Brazilian rhythms, Cape Verdean music floats over all the islands. The violin, guitar, saxophone and percussion are the main instruments accompanying the poetic texts of popular songs.
After all, Cape Verde has been a popular tourist destination among European and American lately who enjoy tropical climate and natural beauties on their travel. For avid travelers from other parts of the world, it is the time now to get to know this little country which is not far south from another archpelago of the Spanish Canary Islands.

Hitting Cape Town during its peak summer season, we were more than slightly worried about where the money for our accommodation was going to come from! Needless to say, the pressure of finding a cost effective, yet still an appealing option did nothing for our blood pressures. That’s what happens when you’re demanding women with an unshakable plan to visit a city at the peak of its summer heat, whilst still retaining the option of receiving luxurious accommodation and a reasonable spending budget. At first, I would have said, “ If pigs could fly?”. However, although the prospects of fulfilling all my preferences were looking a little grim at first, after a little advice and research, we found that our options were far from limited.
Tip: To save a little stress, some of you may want to take advantage of the more sensible option and lower rates available in the off-peak months from April to September. Just be aware of the cooler temperatures and lack of ‘holiday’ atmosphere! Nevertheless, we’ve been told it’s a great time to go if you’re looking for maximum relaxation. And ladies, think of all those designer goodies you can splash out on after saving you’re cash through other means.
If you’re really strapped for cash or want to accumulate all your money for the many thrilling indoor and outdoor activities Cape Town has to offer, back packing is certainly the way forward. Of course, the only back packing I was planning on doing was to be carrying all my shopping back to our hotel. However, we’ve been told that backpacking has become the latest craze in Cape Town and some people boast how it’s the only way to savour and absorb all the beauty and picturesque views it has to offer. On our travels we passed many appealing and inviting lodges, which looked more inviting and quaint than what you’d expect from our B&B’s down the road back home.
Nevertheless, we were quite happy with the charm and hospitality that oozed from our luxurious 4* boutique hotel. Although it wasn’t a magnificent 5* resort that you can find scattered on the False Bay coastline or City Bowl area, it was more than perfect for our week long stay. Perhaps one of the most friendly and inviting places we’d ever stayed, it soon became apparent that the standards were incredibly high. The great places to stay in Cape Town, we’d suggest, are definitely the smaller and more intimate guest houses and hotels. Not only did I achieve my three aims, of sun, shopping and stunning accommodation, but we exceeding our expectations for the whole trip!
