The beauty of cape verde

Boa Vista

Boa Vista is an island in the east of Cape Verde, is well known for its marine turtles, many of which you can see lining the beaches, particularly during mating seasons. Its name literally translates as ‘beautiful view’ and once you catch a glimpse of the sandy shores lining its coastline, you will see why. Santa Monica beach is the perfect beach if you are travelling with children, or indeed if you aren’t a confident swimmer- as it’s well known for its relatively shallow water. Guests can relax and sip a cocktail on the sand whilst watching the tiny fishing boats bobbing in the crystal clear water nearby.

Santa Monica is also known for its array of water based activities, and plays host to many surfing championships throughout the year. Guests can also take advantage of its beautiful waters, and spend a day snorkelling.

If you are lucky enough, there are many villas which line the beach front, which are available for rent all year round. They are the perfect place to stay if you’re looking for a little piece of paradise, literally on your front door step.

Sao Vicente

Sao Vicente, located between the islands of Santo Antão and Santa Luzia and is well known for its rich cultural scene. Mindelo, its central town, is a hive of activity in the evenings, with a vibrant nightlife, comprising of fun bars and intimate restaurants.

Sao Vicente beaches are not known for their beauty, and are more rocky than those of Boa Vista. However, there are still some gems to be found; Foya Branca can be easily reached by shuttle bus (which runs from Mindelo every 15 minutes throughout the day) and boasts perfect waters for diving activities because of its natural lagoons. Visitors can also try their hand at windsurfing, which brings lots of people to the region each year. Visit between November and April for the best surfing conditions.

Flights leave from a variety of UK destinations and are reasonably priced all year round. If you are looking to visit on a budget, flights can be cheaper out with peak season (think April or May.) Be sure to check air fares comparison sites to make sure you are getting the best price!
