Tony Fernandes moving to Jakarta and Aireen the new CEO of Airasia Malaysia

Past couple of weeks was perhaps the most important moment for Airasia, the best budget airline in the world. With new business expansion plans coming their way, reshuffling of its management team seems unavoidable. The biggest news to us is Tony Fernandes, the man behind the success of the airline, is leaving Jakarta and a new CEO was named today to replace Tony for Malaysia operation of Airasia. Since its incorporation a decade ago, Airasia has always been run by its founder, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes. Under his supreme management quality and vision, Airasia has been the leader of local aviation industry for many years and is now the best low cost carrier in the world with a total of 103 aircrafts in its fleet.

Being a visionary leader of the airline, Tony Fernandes is now looking at a much larger context to further expand its base regionally, and decided recently to leave his seat in Airasia’s Malaysia headquarter’s CEO office, and move to the new regional office of Airasia Asean in Jakarta. A new CEO was announced yesterday to replace him for day-to-day operations of running the Malaysian head office, while Fernandes will remain as the supremo of the whole AirAsia group which listed in KLSE Malaysia. Starting July 1st, Aireen Omar, previously AirAsia’s regional head of corporate finance and treasury, will be sitting in Tony Fernandes’s office in Malaysia as the new CEO of Airasia Malaysia. By delegating authority to the new CEO, he can instead concentrate in exploiting the potential customers base of 600 Millions in Indonesia as well as Asean countries.

What will all these changes affect us as budget travelers?

Will Tony’s deliberate move to shift his base to Jakarta affect the competitiveness of Airasia?

We don’t know. What I do know Airasia has a few regional operation offices around Asia including Thailand and Japan, which successfully introduced extreme low fares to budget travelers in the region. Furthermore, its joint venture with All Nippon Airline (ANA) has also brought us exceptional cheap domestic flights within Japan as well as AirasiaX flights to Japan. It was why I had the once in a life time opportunity to fly to Japan cheaply!

I bet the changes in Airasia top management will only bring more cheap flights to us as budget travelers who wish to fly! 🙂 – Travel Feeder, your ultimate travel photo blog
