Travel photos – The great Gyoza dish of Japan

In addition to the Top 16 Japanese food to try that I shared earlier, Gyoza is another delicacy or snacks that you should not miss to try when come to Japan. Originally a Chinese dish commonly called dumpling, Gyoza has become a favourite food among Japanese and many varieties of Gyoza dish with different filling and tastes can be found all over Japan.

Generally, Gyoza is a wrapped dough filled with various ingredients such as pork, green onion, ginger, cabbage, vinegar and soy sauce, and fried over hot plate until cooked. Sometimes the pork is replaced by shrimp or other meats. The small shop selling Gyoza I’m recommending here is located near Tsukiji market just outside the Tsukiji station Exit 4.

Eventhough the shop is so small, the great smell of Gyoza will make any passer-by notices it and wants to give it a try. We passed by the little restaurant every time we walked to Ginza from our Ginza Capital Hotel. On the last night in Tokyo, we decided to had our supper there, before it closed. We did not rush into it when we found it 2 days ago because we had enough Chinese dumpling at our place and did not expect much difference from Gyoza in Japan. We realised we were wrong in that sense as Gyoza dish of Japan tastes better than what we used to have elsewhere, perhaps the ingredients used in Japan taste better.

The restaurant is so small that only a bar counter and a row of high seats can be accommodated. We picked the first 2 seats in front of the entrance.

We ordered a pint of Asahi beer as a start. There are many different types of Gyoza dish to choose from. We picked the hot selling Gyoza that looks like a grilled rib and a portion of shrimp Gyoza.

You can eat Gyozas with various sauces as well as their favourite sea salts.

This is the rib-like gyoza with pork, green onion, cabbage and vinegar filling. They are simply yummy! 🙂

The price of a portion of gyoza dish, like the one you see above, starts from ¥280, or about USD3, which is reasonable for such a delicious meal. Make sure you have a try at one of those many Gyoza restaurants in Japan and I’m sure you will like them as much as I do. 🙂 – Travel Feeder
