Weekly news updates about travel @ 21st August

This is the weekly news updates on travel related events happening around the world. Some would affect your travel plans or your upcoming travel itinerary, while others could lead you to embark on new travel ideas. These are things happening in the past week:

  • New Zealand worst snow storm in 40 years – A freak snow storm has left hundreds of people stranded and unable to return to their homes in New Zealand’s central North Island, affected cities of Wellington and Christchurch. A state of emergency was declared after heavy snow trapped around 700 people in their vehicles on two of the country’s major roads. TF says: The world weather is changing in recent years. We can’t predict when would be the best time to travel anymore. What we can predict is the end of our world! So let’s go travel NOW!
  • JAL joins partners in low cost carrier bid – Japan Airlines Corp., Mitsubishi Corp. and Australia’s Qantas Group announced Tuesday they will jointly launch a low-cost carrier in Japan, aiming to boost their competitiveness in the market here amid an influx of budget carriers. Jetstar Japan Co. plans to start domestic service by the end of 2012, flying from Narita International Airport and Osaka’s Kansai International Airport, but it isn’t known yet which hub will serve as its base. TF says: This is another new lost cost carrier bid after All Nippon Airways Co. (ANA), JAL’s rival, announced last month the establishment of the low-cost carrier AirAsia Japan, together with Malaysia’s AirAsia low cost airline.
  • AirAsia is introducing RM10.00 conventional check-in counter charges – All flights booked from 11th September 2011, an additional charges of RM10.00 would be applied at airport conventional check-in counter as a fee. This is to encourage passengers to check in their flights online or via check-in kiosk. TF says: This is a trend in low cost airline sectors. SAS flights that I took from Copenhagen already forced all passengers to check in via machine / kiosk.
