Travel by photos – Tasting the black pork BBQ in Jeju Island, Korea

One of the great reasons why people flocking into South Korea, apart from K-pop, is definitely the savoury and yummy local Korean foods! Before flying to South Korea for your holidays, there are top local Korean foods that you should know and plan to try when touching down the Korean  land. However, listing down just the 10 top ‘must-try’ local foods seems too ambitious. If we combine all those ‘mouth-watering’ delicacies from different regions of South Korea that with individual tastes, there are literally ten’s, if not hundred’s, of them for one to list down.

One of the ‘overlooked’ great local foods that I found in Jeju Island and wish to share here, is the black pork BBQ in Jeju, the local Jeju style of Samgyeopsal, or Korean BBQ.  Most interestingly, Jeju BBQ serves pork of the local breed Jeju black pig with distinctive flavour! Don’t mix it with the Japanese Kagoshima black pig which is of English Berkshire breed and with bigger and fatter body.

Here are some photos snapped during my dinner of Jeju black pork BBQ in Jejua Island. Tasting the black pork of Jeju was always one of my travel wishes. To start off the cooking process, fresh Jeju black pork belly slices are placed on the portable stove that already been lit up and heated. Side dishes such as cabbage and bean sprout Kimchi are provided. Garlic and pork fat slices are also there to enrich the flavour of your BBQ dinner.

Each diner is served with a coupple of side dishes of green onion salad called Pajori and some pepper salt.

The whole set up looks something like this. Did you notice the lettuce? We need them at the later stage…

Cutter is also provided for you to cut the pork into smaller cubes. Then you need to stir the meat and grill them until cooked.

The grilling process in fact adds a lot of fun to the whole dinner session. If you love smoky experience then you will love Korean BBQ. Otherwise, you should still try it once yourselves.

Depends on your preference, the pork should be flapped around frequently to grill slowly until brownish coloured with surfaces slightly burnt.

There are now ready to eat! 🙂

Instead of using chopsticks or fork, we use lettuce! Now you know the usage of lettuce. Put the pork, green onions, salt, pepper or even Kimchi onto the lettuce and wrap it up!

Open up your mouth big and put it in! Enjoy the flavour and you will  love it. Jeju black pork is more chewier with distinctive taste than the rest of the pork variants. Though I personally prefer the Kagoshima pork from Japan, Jeju black pork should also be one local delicacy to try in Jeju island of Korea which is hard to find elsewhere. Isn’t trying and tasting different foods in difference countries a great experience for a vacation travel?

If you have tried it before, let me know what you think of the black pork BBQ in Jeju.
