Portugal and Spain: the main sites to see

Guest Post

As two of the most popular holiday destinations for travellers, there are numerous activities and experiences to enjoy whilst holidaying in Portugal or Spain. For those interested in taking a trip to these beautifully, sunny climates here are a list of some of the main sites which you just cannot afford to miss!

Beaches

One of the main attractions of both Spain and Portugal are its beaches. As Spain has been the most popular European destination for British travellers since 1994 it is hardly surprising that it is filled will beautiful beaches.

The Algarve region of Portugal is one of the most popular beach destinations for tourists and is the third richest region of the country. Meanwhile, the coastline of Spain (which covers 5,000 miles) is said to have some of the best beaches such as San Sebastian and Playa de Las Catedrales in Galicia.

Those interested in the perfect beach holidays should therefore consider looking for villas to rent in Spain or Portugal. This accommodation will typically be positioned in prime locations and some may even offer direct access to beaches and coastlines.

Nature

For travellers to these countries, nature clearly plays an important role. Whilst beaches are one attraction, rugged landscapes, mountains and caves also characterise these countries and make them a great place to visit.

For some of the best natural attractions, travellers should consider visiting quieter regions such as the island of Formentera. This is a short ferry ride away from Ibiza and offers a much more serene and peaceful experience for tourists with the natural landscape virtually untouched by human interference.

History and Religion

Both Portugal and Spain have colourful and varied histories meaning that there is plenty for enthusiasts to see whilst on holiday here. One site that should not be missed is the megalithic monuments which are found in the Balearic island of Menorca. This is one of the largest collections found in the Mediterranean and is a spectacular sight.

As well as this, Spain holidays will also give visitors the chance to explore a number of great historical and religious sites. The Santiago de Compostela Cathedral and Montserrat Shrine are popular attractions that attract visitors all year round.

In Portugal, Batalha Monastery and the Convento de Christo are popular attractions. The first of these took two centuries to construct and features both Gothic and Manueline styles. The second is a fortified monastery that offers intriguing Templar history for visitors and has also been labelled as a World Heritage Site.

Nightlife

Of course, holiday activities aren’t just enjoyed during the day and a number of travellers will go on holiday with the intention of enjoying the vibrant nightlife of a foreign country. Both Portugal and Spain are known for these types of activities and there are a number of regions which are labelled as “party capitals”.

Ibiza and Magaluf in Mallorca are obvious choices for Spain whilst Lagos and the Algarve are popular options for those deciding to stay in Portugal villas. 🙂 – Travel Feeder, your ultimate photo travel guide to Europe
